UPDATE – Garbanzo was found near Lake Susannah. The owner believes that someone took him there believing he was a turtle. Tortoises are not swimmers.

According to a recent post on Nextdoor (Website), a community-based web forum where neighbors can discuss all manners of issues, a pet tortoise has disappeared from the backyard of a Baldwin Park residence.

Garbanzo, a 3-4 foot long, 50 lb African Sulcata, has lived in the backyard of the home for years and never strayed far. The unnamed owner believes that the tortoise was taken, as he leaves a trail of crushed grass everywhere it roams, and there were no signs of it having ambled away from the private residence.

If you have any information on the disappearing tortoise named Garbanzo, please reach out to Veronica Ward at [email protected].

  1. Thanks for sharing! My size estimate may be a bit off but ya know, he’s a tortoise. Way bigger than a normal box turtle you may see all the time.

  2. I remember stopping traffic on Lakemont to save that bub last year. Little did I know I had thrown my hands up to five cop cars… They flashed their lights and gave me a thumbs up.
