A new memorial statue has been installed in Blue Jacket Park called, The Lone Sailor.

The seven foot bronze cast statue now stands in the park which replaced the former Orlando Naval Training Center, previously open for 30 years, with his hands stuck in the pockets of his coat. He was modeled after a second-class Navy petty officer boatswain’s mate.

The piece was originally sculpted by Stanley Bleifeld, a figurative sculptor for the Baseball Hall of Fame, who passed in 2011. His original Lone Sailor was created for the U.S. Navy Memorial along with three other sculptures. Replicas of those pieces have been installed across the country, just like this one in Baldwin Park.

  1. I’m happy to see recognition of the past there. That base closing was a loss for Orlando.

  2. Just once I’d like to see a memorial to those that fight war itself. Peacemakers get no recognition.
