We often get photographs from our Bungalower readers of things that are happening around town, and we have started featuring them on the site in a series called Eyes on the Street, in honor of our hero, Jane Jacobs.

New restaurant in Somona space. Was told it was new owners, the owners of RusTeak.” – Jenna Halliwell

Miss Halliwell is correct, according to restaurant staff that we spoke with, the Sonoma Kitchen (Facebook | Website) in Thornton Park has been purchased by the owners of Rusteak (Website | Facebook) in College Park. The new name of the restaurant is the Stubborn Mule (Facebook), and it is located at 100 S. Eola Drive [GMap].

Operating hours are 4-11 p.m. Tuesday-Friday, 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Saturday, and 11 a.m-9 p.m. Sunday.

The original staff was retained during the switch, but the menu has already been changed, as you can see below.

We received the following quote from the new owner:

“Our plan is to quietly transition Sonoma Kitchen into a new concept. Our new concept is called The Stubborn Mule. The new concept will be a “baby brother” to RusTeak. It will have a fun and polished atmosphere with a huge focus on Moscow Mules, craft cocktails, craft beers and a great wine selection. Our food menu will have fun New American twists. We will continue to source locally and be a scratch kitchen much like The Stubborn Mules big sis RusTeak.

We inherited a great staff and plan to re-train the team before launching the new brand. Our target grand opening celebration will be Thursday September 1st. Thank you again!” – Jonathan Canonaco

  1. Part of the problem was that Sonoma was a decent restaurant with OK prices and then they changed the menu to make it “fancier” but actually made the food worse. When they did that, they also jacked up the prices by like 30%.
My wife and I met there and we used to go for anniversaries. Average bill was like $60. Last time we went, the menu was different, they food was poor, and our bill was like $90. As I said, that was the last time we went.

  2. I love Rusteak – this will be nice to see what they do with The Stubborn Mule! Mike Mike Dudley, Laura Lukefahr -new happy hour spot

  3. Jeff McClain if you’re referring to Sonoma absolutely the food was not so good. RusTeak however is amazing, they have two locations one in Windemere and one in College Park, I suggest you try them . There both equally fantastic . And awesome service as well Looking forward to that amazingness here in downtown.

  4. If I eat a tomato there that’s not so bad it makes me want to throw it across the room, I’m going to call that a win. 🙂
