"White Senior Citizen Goes On An Extremely Racist Rant at a poetry event in Winter Park, Fl."
Edit: thank you to everyone who has said they're sorry I experienced this. I appreciate you all for that, but the person who took the real brunt of that verbal assault was the young queen who handled the situation with class and love. Her name is Chelsea and she works at the Soul Centre. Salute to her for being the strong and impressive woman that she is.
This last Saturday at an open mic called Express Your Soul held at The Soul Centre in the Trader Joe shopping plaza an extremely racist incident happened. They were holding their first ever open mic event. The Soul Centre is a black owned business that promotes healthy holistic living in the majority white affluent neighborhood of Winter Park. This event was done to promote love, peace, unity, meditation, yoga, self health and healing etc. The show consisted of poets, souls singers and artists displaying their work.
I was performing my poem about the Pulse tragedy when a white senior citizen starting screaming at us about terrorism. She became increasingly belligerent and began shouting racial slurs at us in an incredibly racist rant. The majority of the audience members were people of color, African Americans and Latinos. I caught the entire thing on camera.
Last night at an open mic I showed this to a few people and talked about it openly to the audience. One young white man told me he's heard of racism but never actually seen it and his stomach turned watching the video. My jaw dropped. That someone has never tually aeen racism in this day and age. After the show was over an older white man tried to explain away the incident saying she may have had dementia or something even though he didn't see the video I had. I showed it to him and he changed his argument and continued to try to explain it away. No offense to my Caucasian friends but I feel like I was staring at white privilege in its entirety and complete purity last night.
I'm posting this video because racism needs to be put on blast. Racism and racial hatred needs to be exposed and not hidden. People shouldn't be able to scar others and not have it known that they did that. This video needs to be seen and shown to anyone who keeps trying to say that racism is a thing of the past and that it's not as bad as we all think. Please share this video so everyone everywhere can see that racism is still alive and well and happening in our own backyards. There are literally people who are still clueless about it.
I hope this raises awareness, I also hope that racist lady becomes infamous and I hope to create a hashtag #exposeracism and get it to trend. I hope for everyone to carry their cells phones and cameras and record any racial incident you see and put it on blast. No more making excuses for racists and no more hiding it.
The scariest thing you can show Uncle Sam is a mirror. This is your mirror America.
Please share and spread this video. Please ask everyone you know to share it. If anyone knows how to submit it to the news then feel free to do so or show me how and I'll do it myself. And if anyone would like to share it, but has an issue with me personally then feel free to download it and edit me out or I can edit a shorter version and cut myself out of it entirely and send it to you. And if anyone has an issue with being tagged then feel free to untag yourself.
Peace and poetry.

WARNING – STRONG LANGUAGE IN VIDEO.
We often get photographs and tips from our Bungalower readers of things that are happening around town, so we have started featuring them on the site in a series called Eyes on the Street, in honor of our favorite urbanist Jane Jacobs.
The following message and video was posted by Orlando resident, Eddie Figures, on his Facebook page, following an incident at an event taking place at a venue in Winter Park’s Trader Joe shopping plaza.
The woman approaching the “senior citizen” towards the end of the video runs the Soul Centre, according to Figures who allowed us to share the video.
