Cities across the continent are clamoring to catch the eye of Amazon, following an announcement that the company was looking for a new home for their planned “HQ2” or second headquarters.

The company is looking to invest over $5 billion in construction for this new facility, which would provided an expected 50,000 high-paying jobs for the facility alone, not to mention jobs that piggy-back from that initial investment.

Amazon’s announcement was punctuated with a Request for Proposals from cities and regional economic development organizations across North America, launching a high-stakes continental bidding contest.

The New York Times ranked a number of cities that they believe to be the top contenders in the country for the new headquarters, including Orlando, which made it to the top 25. We were disqualified for not having enough software programmers and designers in our job market.

  1. Disqualified for not having enough programmers and designers? That logic is flawed. Techie people will move to where the jobs are located. I know plenty of people from other big-tech markets that would come to Orlando if the good jobs were here.

  2. Yeah, we also would have lost out on mass transit availability. We’d have made the quality of life, and possibly willingness to pay to play, but there is no reliable mass transit outside of the slow downtown buses.
