Brain-eating amoeba experts from across the country are meeting at the Florida Hospital Church today to educate physicians on Primary Amebic Meningoencephalitis (PAM).

The rare PAM infection is caused by the Naegleria fowleri, an amoeba that is commonly found in warm freshwater.

This year’s conference will feature a teenage survivor of the infection, Sebastian DeLeon. DeLeon was treated last year at the Florida Hospital for Children after becoming ill on a trip to Orlando with his family.
