Orlando Fire Station One

The City of Orlando Fire Department announced that they received Accredited Agency Status from the Commission on Fire Accreditation, International.

This just after receiving their ISO 1 rating for the second year in a row. Orlando is only one of 15 departments in the US to get both.

ISO is the national standard for rating and ranking fire departments. Orlando’s rating is the highest possible and only 55 communities in the country have similarly ranked fire departments.

“These recognitions and top ratings allow Orlando residents to live, work and go to sleep every night knowing that their fire protection is the best in the country,” said Mayor Dyer in a written statement. “Attaining these recognitions demonstrate the City’s continued commitment to providing the highest quality services to our community.”

More information on the programs:

The Accreditation Program was developed by the Center for Public Safety Excellence Inc. (CPSE) to identify and maintain optimal levels of fire and emergency services for agencies. The program involves a comprehensive self-assesment and evaluation model that enables fire and emergency service organizations to examine their service levels and performance in a way that allows them to compare to industry best practices. This process leads to improved service delivery.

ISO collects information on municipal fire protection efforts from more than 47,000 fire response jurisdictions throughout the United States. Using the Fire Suppression Rating Schedule (FSRS), ISO assigns a Public Protection Classification (PPC) from 1 to 10, with Class 1 representing superior property fire protection and Class 10 indicating that the area’s fire suppression program doesn’t meet minimum criteria. By classifying communities’ ability to suppress fires, ISO helps communities evaluate their public fire-protection services. Generally, better ISO ratings lead to lower fire insurance premiums and reduced insurance rates.
