Walk to School Day

Over 40 Orange County public schools are participating in walking events throughout Orange County today as part of International Walk to School Day.

Orange County Public School Board Chairman Bill Sublette, school board member Nancy Robbinson and Orlando City Council member Robert Stuart along with Best Foot Forward volunteers will participate with students on these events as part of Best Foot Forward’s yearly stand against pedestrian injuries.

Unintentional pedestrian injuries are the fifth-leading cause of injury-related deaths for children ages 5 to 19 in the United States. A press release from Best Foot Forward  noted that they hope today’s event will “remind children as well as walkers and drivers to be actively aware of pedestrians and encourage safe walking to and from school.”

OCPS endorses two pedestrian safety initiatives for its elementary schools – a monthly program called Walk-N-Roll and a Sunshine State Standard, compliant K-5 curriculum called WalkSafe teach students safe walking practices.
