This week the Orlando International Fringe Theatre Festival (Website | Facebook) held their lottery to determine which artists would perform at Orlando’s 23rd Fringe Festival.
The Orlando Fringe Festival is the longest running fringe festival in the US. The idea is that any artist can apply to perform and the selection is made via a drawing versus a jury.
“It’s really important for the artists because we don’t want any artistic control,” festival GM George Wallace told Bungalower. “We want them to have all of the freedom in the world,” he added.
While you might expect a lottery selection process to result in low quality shows, Wallace said it’s the opposite.
“While sometimes you might see the worst show you’ve ever seen, chances are you’ll also see the best show you’ve ever seen,” he said.
The festival runs from May 14 to 27 in Loch Haven Park and Ivanhoe Village.
“We’re really giving artists the opportunity to produce a show for a very little investment,” Wallace said.
Here are a look at the list of performances that were picked at the lottery. The selection is broken into three groups based on the size of venue for the performance.
