The NORA (WebsiteFacebook) construction is well underway with a late spring/early summer expected opening.

The mixed-use apartment building is at 899 N Orange Ave on the corner of  North Orange Avenue and Marks Street in the North Quarter/Uptown area of downtown [GMap].

The six-story building includes 246 one and two bedroom apartments, a parking garage with 400 spaces, a courtyard and pool and 11,500 square feet of retail.

They will start pre-leasing the apartments soon and hope to have the first apartments ready this spring.

Apartment amenities at NORA include an outdoor pool area with fountain and lounge space. Inside there will be a club house and lounge with a pass through fire-place and a gym.

Inside the apartments you’ll also find high-end finishes including some not typically found in apartments. This includes large closets, a moveable island in the kitchen, garage door style cabinets and a floating bath vanity in addition to stainless steel appliances.

GDC Properties, the company building NORA, is also one of the developers behind the North Quarter name.

The idea, says Rich DeMarco with GDC Properties, is to create and blend the neighborhood feel with downtown living.

“You’re in downtown, you have everything you need, but its more neighborhood like,” he said.

“We’re more in the middle of it than the rest of downtown,” He added talking about North Quarter’s proximity not just to downtown but also to Ivanhoe Village, Mills 50 and College Park.

From a retail perspective NORA will add over 10,000 square feet of retail to North Quarter.

There will be five store fronts, three of which will be restaurants or food service.

I really like the look and feel of this development.  I do remember a time when a much larger proposal, or proposals, were planned for this site.  This seems to work quite well with the streetwall of Uptown, really adding a commanding presence, and most importantly it will bring in new residents and retail / restaurants to the area. 
    The prospects are exciting for Uptown — it is increasingly becoming more and more desirable (dare I say it will soon give South Eola / Thornton Park a run) due to the convenience of Mills Park, Mills / 50, as well as other close-by thriving neighborhoods like Ivanhoe Row and College Park. 
    I think Uptown will really hit it’s stride when the Sevens development is built.  At that point, the substantial infrastructure and density will exist to build a unique fabric for the district.  I do think that calming features need to be introduced to Orange and Magnolia avenues in order to slow traffic through this area.
