2014’s Trash 2 Trends 1st place winner for Top Design by Meylin Rojas

Keep Orlando Beautiful (Website | Facebook) is moving their  Trash 2 Trends Fashion Show to a larger venue for their February 28th event.

The fashion show features clothing made using only “trash” or upcycled materials. Judging categories include top design, avant garde, most wearable, best use of materials, and audience choice.

Last year’s inaugural event took place in the Orange Studio and was sold out. The fundraiser brought in $11,000 for the non-profit.

Following the success of the event, Keep Orlando Beautiful’s advisory board decided to move the show to the Orlando Repertory Theatre. The theatre, known better as The REP, has nearly three times the capacity of Orange Studio.

This year’s fashion show will feature over 30 local designers and artists. Rules for the event include:

  • Materials must be “trash,” items headed to the landfill or recycling facility.
  • Binding techniques such as sewing, glue, tape, and wire are allowed.
  • Materials can be written on, printed on, painted on, dyed, manipulated, etc.
  • Zippers, buttons, fasteners are permitted.
  • If your fashion includes accessories (bags, hats, belts, etc.) they must follow the guidelines as well.
  • Consider the “wearability” of your look when a model is wearing it and walking down a runway.
  • Your design may not be more than 4’ in width.
  • Be wildly creative! Make wearable fashion from discarded items! Stretch your thinking about how fashion can be more sustainable.

At a recent event in preparation for the fundraiser, American Textile Recycling Services announced that it would allow designers to pull materials from their weekly recycling collections.

Tickets for the Trash 2 Trends Fashion Show went on sale last Friday.
