The Orange County Neighborhood Preservation & Revitalization department is launching a traffic signal cabinet art program called St.art Something, that will transform over 600 County maintained signal cabinets into public art. The program builds on the success of a pilot project they launched in 2010 on International Drive that used private and special tax district funding in the hopes of preventing crime and vandalism while simultaneously beautifying the streetscape.
The boxes are available for “sponsoring entities” to partner with artists at their own discretion. Entities may include groups or individuals, but neighborhood organizations must be registered in the Orange County Neighborhood Directory.
Designs can include the name of the community area or district and community logo. Artwork may not include nude images, religious symbols, political messages, images of a living person, resemble graffiti, or “otherwise be determined offensive to community standards.”
Unlike the Mills 50 District program, the boxes will not be washed and primed prior to being painted by the participating artists. The County is also not paying for materials or giving the artists a stipend for their participation.
All upkeep of the box is the responsibility of the sponsoring entity.
