The good ol’ days of being able to pull into a parking spot only to see that there is already paid-for-time on it is over.

The new parking sensors have been installed on Orlando’s streets and are currently being programmed. If all goes according to plan, the sensors should be operational very soon.

The Smart Meters are solar powered and able to process credit cards, which has been a definite plus for visitors to the downtown core.

The flip side is that the sensors on the new Smart Meters will be able to sense if there is actually a car parked there. If the car leaves, the meter will reset itself. Mobile users will supposedly be able to use their phones to find an open parking spot without having to circle the block a number of times.

We’re still waiting for an official launch date, but according to some parking attendants we spoke with on Monday, the date has already come and gone. We will keep you updated as we get more information.

  1. I can’t wait until the meter sensors start malfunctioning and incorrectly identifying that a car has left the spot, when it hasn’t.

  2. Since they have the technology to reset the meter to zero if a person leaves, it only makes sense that they reimburse the card with that money

  3. In Tampa and St. Pete, they have these wonderful meters that you can pay through an app on your phone. Running late? No problem – just add time from your phone to avoid a ticket. Could Orlando do this? Of course not! God forbid they lose their precious parking ticket revenue. Now, they won’t just get you for going past your time, they’ll take back your unused time as well. Way to go Orlando!

  4. Not to piddle in anyone’s Cheerios, but there will be other people looking at the same app, as well as people a few car lengths ahead of you who may pull into that “open” spot before you have a chance to get to it. “Circling the block” may still be unavoidable. Just my 2 cents. 🙂

  5. They should refund the money back on my card if they aren’t going to let the next person use it. I’m sure that’s not going to happen though.

  6. On the flip side, I like that they’ll all take credit cards & the ability to have an app that shows where empty spots are!
