The City of Winter Park is looking at possibly changing their historic preservation guidelines.

The City is looking at making it easier  to preserve and designate new historic districts as well as making it more difficult to demolish existing sites of historic note. Changes would include lowering the required amount of votes from 67 percent to 50 percent in order to establish a new historic district.

There are two public meetings this week: Thursday, May 7 at 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. at the Winter Park Welcome Center.

Current historic districts include:

New potential historic districts could possibly include:

  • Rollins College Quarter
  • Palmer Avenue
  • Hannibal Square

The current draft of the proposed changes to Winter Park’s policies regarding historic preservation can be read HERE.

  2. Richard Reep did an interesting piece for the Orlando Weekly about it where he talks about how it would make it harder for developers or home owners to “do what they do.”
