We’ve had a few readers asking us about the long-delayed bike park in east Orlando’s Coytown neighborhood between Bumby and the Fashion Square Mall [Gmap] .
According to the Mayor’s office, the project was delayed when it was discovered that the soil had been contaminated by a leaked termite-pesticide. The site was once the former Naval Training Center but was gifted to the City to be used as a park.

The Navy is leading the cleanup of the 20-acre site, and according to a story by the Orlando Sentinel, it was to be finished last year.

The project site is linked to the Cady Way Trail and will feature more bike trails and pump tracks (berms) for more experienced riders.

The City of Orlando expects that the Mountain Bike Park will be open sometime in the next year.

  1. Pete Fuller it looks like although the projects are adjacent to each other, the Elan apartments arent necessarily going to be located on the former Navy property, which means they weren’t, necessarily, exposed to the same toxins as the the Druid Park property. However, the Sentinel report says that they had to dig down to the water table to extract the contaminated soil, so it’s not that far fetched an idea that the contaminants may have migrated over, although it looks like that site is a little higher in elevation. We’ll definitely have to look into that!

  2. Looking at the GMap link, how is it that the MTB park has been delayed because of contamination from the Naval facility buildings, yet there is an apartment complex under construction on virtually the same plot of land?

  3. Its called a pump track not berms. It needs to be completely rebuilt. The trail is gone and needs to be recut. Also this article gives as much info as SORBA Orlando does about this park, no info.
