A possible urban garden could be coming to Parramore on the corner of West South Street and Hicks Avenue, just blocks away from the Amway Arena [Gmap].

Growing Orlando (Website), a non-profit urban farm initiative, has requested use of the City-owned vacant lot to further their mission of increasing the production and distribution of locally grown food in downtown Orlando. The site would also operate as an outdoor classroom, teaching participants how to grow their own food and to incubate future urban farmers.

Growing Orlando will make the produce grown at the site available for purchase at the Lake Eola Farmers Market, sell the surplus to restaurants, and potentially construct a stand somewhere in Parramore where they could accept SNAP/EBT vouchers.

The garden will include a work-share program where volunteers can exchange hours for produce.

The garden project will go in front of the Municipal Planning Board at the July 21 meeting.
