Walgreens has just submitted their signage designs for their upcoming location in the former Valencia College administration building downtown.

The historic building was built in 1911 and was the home of the First National Bank. We wrote about it HERE.

The aforementioned application is for a Major Certificate of Appropriateness to add a new vertical sign to the corner of the building as well as other signage on facades and newly added canopies. The designs will be considered for approval at the upcoming January 6 Historic Preservation Board meeting.

What do you think of the signage?

  1. The signage is ugly but it will be nice to have a drug store downtown since there isn’t one. Now I can walk, as it should be.

  2. Awww they should spell Walgreens down the spire and leave that as the only signage. Similarly to the historically accurate sign.

  3. We need to be mindful of the historic precedent that Walgreens had on Church Street during the 40’s and 50’s. Should go back to historic signage.

  4. Why do Walgreens and CVS put stores every half mile? I’ve never seen more than about 5 people in any of them. Seems like a giant waste of money and resources.

  5. That being said, I’m happy to see retail finally returning to downtown. It’s too bad that McCrory’s couldn’t survive long enough to see it.

  6. These architects need to get the hell off the Internet and start spending time in-person, in historic cities… and I’m not talking about Orlando… I’m talking about cities where preservation is the norm and signage isn’t tweaked just enough to appease the local city’s preservation board. Look at the beautiful lines of this venerable building. It deserves more than a minimalist 30 foot probe with a “W” at the top. https://goo.gl/maps/3eWGP2E9du12
