An initiative in St. Paul, Minnesota is seeking to bring positive community change by applying interdisciplinary placemaking and space activation to private front yards. The project is called the Front Yard Festival (Website).

The Front Yard Festival will be held on September 18th across the country. People can participate by transforming their front yards into areas that invite their neighborhood onto their lawns, to share and interact with one another. Some ideas include; hosting a BBQ, installing a Little Free Library, or simply placing a little bench in the shade.

The group behind the fest, has created the Front Yard Placemaking Toolkit, which shares how to turn your front yard into a place where neighbors can meet each other, “where children play, where food is grown, prepared and eaten, where social capital is built, where civic issues are debated, and where attachment to place is made.
