What’s up with Casa Barcelona on Colonial? There are For Rent signs up on the windows.” – Andrea Urrea

UPDATE: We previously reported that Casa Barcelona had closed before ever opening, which was incorrect. They opened for approximately two months prior to closing their business.

Casa Barcelona, the mysterious replacement tenant for the former California Burrito Express at 3922 E. Colonial Drive [GMap], has apparently thrown in the towel before ever opening.

We spoke with someone on location who informed us that they’ve already found a tenant for the space and it is no longer on the market. A Caribbean seafood restaurant is looking to move into the space in three months. The aforementioned For Rent signs have been removed, but the banners saying they are open remain in place.

Also, Casa Barcelona received approval from City Council for a Small Business Facade grant in July, 2016, which we wrote about HERE. The grant was not to exceed $20,0000, per the decision of the City Councillors. According to City Hall, they were issued a check for $18,802 on September 26, 2016. The total estimated cost of the repairs on the building was estimated at $48,525.
When facade improvements are made, the business owner must show their receipts before being issued a check by the City, which is what they did. The Small Business Facade grant program is in actuality a loan and recipients are expected to reimburse the City and the agreements do have provisions for businesses that go out of business, however, the City still sees it as a success as the investment in the subject property will still remain, regardless of if the building is occupied at the time. The improved facade is believed to make it easier to find a new tenant.
