Hey Brendan, wanna report on OCPS voting to rename Lee Middle to College Park middle so as to not be named after a racist?” – Brad

The School Advisory Council of Robert E. Lee Middle School voted to change the name of the College Park school at a meeting on the evening of February 14. The Council received roughly 1,000 responses from an online survey prior to the meeting, according to a report by WESH, HERE.

The new name of the school now will be “College Park Middle School.”

Robert E. Lee was a general in the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia during the Civil War but is cited as having argued against the institution of slavery in letters to his wife, Mary Anna Lee. He was also known to have supported civil rights for newly-freed slaves but to have opposed giving them the right to vote.

Notable Lee quotes include:
I cannot trust a man to control others who cannot control himself.”
I like whiskey. I always did, and that is why I never drink it.”

“I have been up to see the Congress and they do not seem to be able to do anything except to eat peanuts and chew tobacco, while my army is starving.”

A story by the Orlando Sentinel in January, 2016, HERE, claimed most Confederate name-baring schools were a result of the 1954 Supreme Court ruling against the segregation of schools, and that white-run school board renamed their schools to protest the ruling. According to a story by the Washington Post, HERE, there were roughly 188 schools named after Confederate leaders in 2015, 78 of them named after General Lee.
