EDIT: We originally posted that the building was purchased by Bonnewell in 2007, which was incorrect. The building was actually purchased on May 19, 2006, according to Bonnewell himself. The property was then sold to Crec Hoffner Ave LLC in 2011, but Burton’s Bar remained Bonnewell’s property. According to the Orange County Property Appraiser’s website, the property was then sold again to T Park LLC in 2014.

We often get photographs and tips from our Bungalower readers of things that are happening around town, so we have started featuring them on the site in a series called Eyes on the Street, in honor of our favorite urbanist Jane Jacobs. Bungalower reader and local photographer Blake Ringholz sent us a photo and following message.

It’s true, the Thornton Park dive bar staple, Burton’s Bar, has closed for business. Bungalower spoke with an employee who told us that they closed on Monday, February 27.

Burton’s was located at 801 E. Washington Street [GMap].

According to a sign taped to the door, the popular watering hole will reopen in another space in 30 days. All furniture and games have been removed.

We’ve reached out to bar owner Robert Bonnewell of Sunstate Partners LLC for more information, but have yet to hear back. Bonnewell and partners purchased the 1921 building back in 2007 2006 and have kept the bar operating since then.

Burton’s was known for affordable draft beer, pool, and as being a dog-friendly venue.

We will share information on their future location and what is replacing them as it becomes public.

  1. This article is still not correct. Bonnewell did not sell the building he was inforeclosure and did a deed in lieu to CREC (Todd Cohen) who purchased the loan from the bank. CREC then leased the property back to Bonnewell He has since been evicted for lack of payment
