In a follow-up to a story we did last November, plans have finally been released for the upcoming renovations of the vacant Grand Avenue School, located at 800 Grand Street [GMap].

The City of Orlando will be moving multiple programs out of the Downtown Recreation Center on Parramore Avenue into the Grand Avenue School site, which closed early in 2017. Programs that will be housed there include the Orlando Pottery Studio, the Parramore Kidz Zone, the Parramore Kidz Zone Baby Institute, Page 15, and the After-School All-Stars.

The Grande Ave building is a two-story Mediterranean Revival building that was built in 1926 during the Florida Land Boom along with a twin school in College Park, the Princeton Elementary School. It was designated a historic landmark by the City of Orlando in 1995.

The contract for the design-restoration build of the site was recently awarded to The Gilbane Building Company, Borrelli and Partners, and JCB Construction team. The budget for the project is $17 million which includes the construction budget and all other fees expected to carry it out; including retrofitting 29,844 SF of the original building and an additional 66,000 SF of new construction.

According to the Final Solicitation letter, the timeline for the project is capped at 900 days, including design time.
