The City of Orlando hosted a media event on Tuesday, July 24, as an official follow-up to the embattled Curry Ford Road Saftey Demonstration project which was hosted by Smart Growth America in April of this year.
The monthlong experiment transformed a short stretch of Curry Ford between South Bumby Avenue and South Crystal Lake Drive by removing two traffic lanes to add on-street bike lanes and a mid-block pedestrian crossing, and people hated it. We know that because Smart Growth America was pretty open about their findings, which we wrote about HERE.
According to the City of Orlando, the study succeeded in reducing speeding by 53 percent and dropped average speeds by five miles-per-hour. There was a five percent decrease in average daily traffic, and a 50 percent increase in bike activity and a 38 percent increase in pedestrian activity. The crosswalk addition encouraged 89 percent of pedestrians to use the crossing rather than jaywalking illegally.

According to the City of Orlando, City Planning staff are currently working on the development of a larger Curry Ford vision plan project that will “help look at the entire area holistically to develop a long-range strategy [for the corridor].” The work for this is already in progress, with the hopes of launching in November of this year. The data collected below will be included as part of the vision development process.
