UPDATE: City PIO Karyn Barber told us after this piece was published that each piece is a custom cut piece of frosted acrylic. To replace them they will either have to be cut from an acrylic block and machined down to match or they will need to develop an improved design. The decision was made to let the jewels remain as they are for now since the manufacturing time would not have aligned with the refurbishment of the star and holiday season this year.

Like Mr. Studdard noted above, the 600-pound golden Jack Kazanzas Star was recently updated to feature new LED lighting both inside and out, and was also given new exterior panels in time for the holidays.
But according to the City of Orlando’s Public Information Officer, there are still some upgrades that need to be done, including its frosted tips. The frosted acrylic tips that look like large light bulbs have aged to the point that you can barely see them light up anymore, although they do have a smidge of luminance but you’d be hard-pressed to see it.
The Facilities Department is planning to have the tips refurbished in time for the next holiday season in 2019.
