Orlando City Council officially voted to ban plastic straws, bags, cutlery, and polystyrene containers in public parks and City-run venues at Monday’s council meeting.

The move is an extension of the City of Orlando’s Sustainability Action Plan, that the Mayor hopes will one day rank Orlando as the most sustainable city in the southeastern United States.

The new policy extends to City-run events, contractors, and parties renting public spaces but events with under 100 participants will be exempt from the rule and plastic straws will still be available on request for customers with disabilities.

The ban will officially come into effect on October 1, 2019.
