Great turnout for the unveiling of the July Perry lynching memorial this morning in Heritage Square.
The event and installation are meant to memorialize the lynching of July Perry and the Ocoee Massacre of 1920.
Perry, who was simply trying to vote in the 1920 election, was arrested and taken to the Orange County Courthouse, where the Heritage Square is now located.
Perry was dragged out of the Orange County Jail by an angry mob and lynched after which over 50 to 60 African-Americans were killed and their homes and businesses were razed to the ground, and over 500 people of color fled the area to Winter Garden and other nearby towns.
