Bakari Burns is the new District 6 commissioner.

Burns managed to defeat Gary “anti-droopy drawers” Siplin by winning 68 percent of the vote to Siplin’s 32 percent of just under 3,000 votes. Only 11.5 percent of eligible voters in District 6 showed up to vote in the runoff election.

Burns, as we told you HERE in our 2019 Voting Guide, grew up in Richmond Heights and lives in Catalina. He’s the CEO of Health Care for the Homeless/Orange Blossom Family Health, which specializes in providing health care for the underinsured or uninsured.

While the International Drive area, which is within the district, had a dismal two percent voter turnout, Both Disney and Universal Studios gave a combined $25,000 to Gary Siplin’s campaign.

Siplin’s wife, Victoria Siplin, is the reigning Orange County Commissioner for County District 6, which covers roughly the same territory as the city’s same-named district.
