The Florida Department of Corrections has been engaged in a contract to provide inmate labor crews to the City of Orlando to assist in maintaining landscape areas for a number of years and that contract is scheduled to end on June 16, 2020.

City Staff is recommending that the contract be extended through June 16, 2021.

Through the contract, the Department of Corrections provides two, five-person workgroups with two corrections officers to supervise them, for forty hours a week. The City of Orlando pays the salaries and position-related expenses of the correction officers in the amount of $58,972 per officer or $114,999 per year.

The City is not responsible for paying for inmate labor. The City of Orlando couldn’t tell us if the inmates receive a wage for their work performed through the program and referred us to the Department of Corrections for more information. We had not received a reply at the time of this post.

Regular non-industry jobs are unpaid in Florida other than center work assignment like cleaning or laundry services, which can pay up to $20 or $50 a month.
