Orlando is ramping up to finally launch some scooters since passing the new Motorized Scooters Pilot Program ordinance this past December.
At this time, roughly four different companies have applied for a scooter permit with Lime and Bird being the first to be approved.
Lime will host a safety class event on Tuesday, January 21 at the Geico Garage behind the Amway Center in Parramore for a crash course in how to operate the motorized devices. The “First Ride” kickoff class is part of the stipulations dictated in the pilot program guidelines, requiring all approved scooter companies to host regular safety classes for their members. Following the course, Lime will release two hundred scooters on Orlando’s streets.
Lime will charge riders $1 to unlock their scooters, followed by 29 cents each minute after activation during the ride.
Bird, which has yet to announce a launch date, will charge $1 to unlock followed by a 39 cent fee per minute.
