Looking for some great hands-on activities with your children that will expose them to volunteerism, hard work, and community spirit? Bungalower is partnering with local tech-guru Gregg Pollack and his children to spotlight some of the amazing local organizations that are always on the lookout for volunteers.

Editor’s Note: All following video, content, and opinions are those of Pollack and not of Bungalower Media.

Did you know that one in five kids is at risk of going to bed hungry tonight? That one in ten Florida residents 50 and older is also at risk? This is precisely why organizations like Second Harvest food bank of Central Florida (Website) are so important to our community. Last year over 63 million meals were distributed which fed 58,000 people per day.

If you’re thinking it’s a massive undertaking, you’re not wrong. Most of the food they collect comes from the Grocery Alliance which has 450 participating grocery stores that donate unsold food and food that has past its sell-by date. These get delivered to Second Harvest warehouses where anyone can volunteer to quality control and sort the donated food before it’s shipped out to one of their 595 non-profit feeding programs in Central Florida.

Last Saturday the kids and I volunteered in their warehouse where we learned how to check the food’s sell-by date, how to sort the food into boxes and package it up for shipping out to those in need.

To donate or volunteer yourself, you’ll want to visit their website.

Second Harvest’s mission is to create hope and nourish lives through a powerful hunger relief network, while multiplying the generosity of a caring community.  What’s not to love about that?

Pollack will be sharing more videos of his family’s adventures in volunteerism into early 2020 as he endeavors to expose his children to the joys of volunteerism and in giving back to the community. If you have any to suggest for a future visit, please do get in touch or contact [email protected] for an introduction.
