The City of Orlando took samples in Lake Arnold on February 11 and they discovered the presence of microcystins (toxins) in the water.
The spike in microcystins is a result of a recent algae bloom in the lake. Cyanobacteria/blue-green algae are always present in the water and blooms occur when a combination of low-flowing, warm water meets excessive nutrients from fertilizers and septic tanks. Yard waste and pet waste contribute as well.
As the algae die, it’s going to smell. Fair warning.
Due to the potential for harm to humans and pets, the City is advising residents to cease any and all water contact activity, including irrigation.
