Orlando Rabbit Care and Adoptions (Facebook | Website) has issued a plea to area residents to refrain from buying pet rabbits as Easter approaches.

The months following Easter always see a spike in surrendered rabbits, according to ORCA, and they’re usually prepared each year but this year, due to COVID-19, the group is already at capacity and the holiday hasn’t even hit yet.

Currently, ORCA’s foster network is overflowing with stray rabbits that are ready to be rehomed, but due to the pandemic, pets of all species are being dumped by families and individuals that are unable to care for them.

Orlando Rabbit Care and Adoptions is reminding Orlandoans that rabbits are a commitment.

  • Rabbits can live for over 10 years.
  • Rabbits are considered an exotic species and must be taken to specialized vets for yearly check-ups.
  • Kids get over the novelty of having a pet rabbit fairly quickly so parents should be prepared to take the reigns when that happens.
  • Rabbits need food, hay, litter, toys, vet care, and more. They’re not cheap.
  • Rabbits don’t always get along with other pets and have their own temperaments.
  • Are you able to commit to taking care of a rabbit if your circumstances change?

Foster homes are needed right away and those who are interested can reach out to the organization via the links provided above.
