J.C. Penney, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last month, has just announced that it will be closing its store at Orlando Fashion Square Mall.

The store closure is one of over 150 that were announced across the country with liquidation sales planned to begin mid-month.

Other J.C. Penney locations in Central Florida, including Florida Mall, Altamonte Mall, and Seminole Towne Center will continue to operate. At least for the time being.

A recent report by Austin Fuller of Orlando Sentinel provided an update from the property’s new owners that the plan to open a new open-air development there is still moving forward and is expected to happen by the end of 2022.

The Orlando Fashion Square Mall is located at 3115 E. Colonial Drive [GMap].

  1. Fashion Square used to be an up and coming place to shop back in the days when it first opened. Burdines was there, Sears, Robinson’s and smaller stores inside the mall on both floors. Penney’s came later, in the eighties, I think. It had a great selection of stores and was nicely decorated at Christmastime and thruout the year. Musical groups, fashion shows, and exhibits all enjoyed by the public. Sad to see this happening to our mall.

  2. This mall doesn’t really deserve to be torn down. The should add more stores and restaurants and reopen the old food court. I love this mall to much to see it go. I have been going to it as a child and always hope to see it standing. Really wish their is someway to not close down the JCPenney. That was one of the first stores their when the mall opened in 1973 as long with Macy’s and Sears (now torn down). Hope to see it stay their for a while and see more stores and restaurants get added. Hope for them to one day open up the food court as I think that would make some business if they re add the Chick-fil-a, McDonalds and Burger King. What a nice mall and hope to see it get fixed and running like it did back in the 80’s.
