The recently-launched union at Orlando Sentinel, the Sentinel Guild, has launched a campaign to take back the ownership of the long-standing Central Florida newspaper.

The union formed in response to fears that arose when Alden Global became the majority shareholder in the paper’s parent company, Tribune Publishing. The hedge fund has made a name for itself through the years for sucking the lifeblood from local newspapers across the country before moving on to acquire new properties.

The “Save our Sentinel” campaign launched on Tuesday, June 30, with an online petition and a call for local investment dollars to found a non-profit leadership team to helm the paper and ensure its long-term sustainability. The campaign is part of a nationwide campaign with all ten Tribune Publishing properties calling for a transition to local ownership.
