The City of Orlando has just issued a Request for Qualifications Statements (RQS) to officially launch the process of selecting a consultant to complete a design and construction plan for a future park under the I-4 interstate in downtown Orlando.

“Once complete this project will not only provide new authentic experiences and unique places but also further unite our entire downtown core.”
 – Orlando Mayor Dyer

The Under-i, once completed, will be a 9.75-acre urban park located in the former surfacing parking lots under the interstate. The City is looking to transform the hardscape into more of a free-flowing urban gathering space that could connect Parramore more formally with downtown Orlando between West Washington Street, West Church Street, Hughey Avenue, and Garland Avenue.

The ideal park design, according to the City, will have space for ballcourts, gathering spaces, performances spaces, play areas, vendor opportunities, and nods to “local heritage.”

The downtown parking lots have been closed since May 2015 due to I-4 Ultimate construction, but that’s also when it was announced that the lots would not be returning once the interstate was finished.
