THE CASE OF THE CHRISTMAS POO

UPDATE: The Lake Alert for Lake Eola has been lifted as of December 18. The lake alert and posted signs will be removed. Please resume all normal water activities associated with this lake.

A Lake Alert has been issued for Lake Eola by the City of Orlando Streets and Stormwater Division.

According to a release from the City of Orlando, an “odor” was detected in the storm system during a routine water quality sampling. Lab results indicated a spike in E. coli counts present near the stormwater pipe that drains into Lake Eola, that exceeded state water quality standards.

The City Stormwater staff are currently working to identify the source of the bacteria and are continuing to monitor the lake. In the meantime, all water contact activities have ceased (no, you couldn’t swim there), including swan boat rentals and signage has been placed around the lake to make park visitors aware. The surrounding park and Christmas light installations are still open to the public.

The Lake Eola swan veterinarian has been notified and is working with City of Orlando parks staff to oversee the care of the swans.
