Pom Moongauklang, the owner of popular sandwich Mecca Pom Pom’s Teahouse and Sandwicheria (Facebook Website), may have just celebrated the 15th anniversary of her Milk District restaurant but she isn’t stopping there, she’s about to host a pop-up featuring food from her childhood in Thailand.

Moongauklang is from the northeastern region of Thailand, or Isaan, and during the pandemic, she’s been finding herself cooking more dishes from her youth for comfort – just like everyone else in town – hence all of the recent announcements of new pizza kitchens.

Moongauklang will now be hosting a special pop-up near the end of the month, featuring a menu of a variety of different Isaan dishes from her youth, that she’s finessed with her chef-skill magic. The pop-up will be taking place in her sandwich restaurant located at 67 N. Bumby Avenue [GMap] as a sort of in-house kitchen takeover. A date has not been announced at this time but the menu will consist of the following:

  • Kao Mun Gai – Steamed chicken topped with roasted garlic, cilantro, and scallions, served on a bed of ginger jasmine rice and accompanied with two sauces for dipping; a fermented soybean sauce and a homemade sweet chili sauce. Sides include a steamed Napa cabbage and vegetable soup.
  • K-Nom Jeen – This “Thai spaghetti” features fish that is pureed with lemongrass, turmeric, kra-chai ginger root, coconut milk, fish sauce, and coconut cream, served with fresh bean sprouts, kaffir lime, and Thai basil, and served with rice vermicelli noodles.
  • Ha Mok Pla – Fish made with kaffir lime and red curry that is steamed in a banana leaf and topped with coconut cream and served with steamed Napa cabbage and ginger rice.
  • Laab Hed – A blend of fresh maitake, shiitake, and enoki mushrooms, mixed with fresh lime, mint, cilantro, scallions, red onions, sweet soy, fermented soy, roasted rice, and served with steamed Napa cabbage and cucumber.
  • Kuay Tiew Haeng (Gok Tew Hank) – Cold rice noodles, sweet soy, fermented soy, mushroom soy, bean sprouts, cilantro, scallions, cilantro, roasted garlic, and peanuts.
