UPDATE: The motion to raise the speed limit from 55 mph to 60 mph has been approved.

The Central Florida Expressway Authority is considering upping the speed limit on State Road 408 as it passes through downtown Orlando from 55 to 60 mph.

The move, according to the expressway authority, is meant to help ease road rage incidents and crashes they see caused by people driving too slowly. According to the expressway authority, over 80 percent of traffic on the road is measured at 66 to 78 mph already, despite the current speed limit.

The change would affect the stretch of S.R. 408 between Kirkman and Chickasaw, and will be voted on by the Central Florida Expressway Authority on Thursday.

  1. Please!! I was literally complaining about the low speed limit on 408 this afternoon. As someone who drives it everyday I’ve always felt the speed limit was unnecessarily low. Feels like it’s been that low just to help out the FHP whose presence has really picked up even more lately.
