The City of Orlando recently tested water samples from Lake Rowena and determined that it had potentially unsafe concentrations of cylindrospermopsin; a cyanotoxin produced by a type of freshwater cyanobacteria that is toxic to liver and kidney tissue.
The City will continue to work with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to monitor the levels in the lake and routinely test the water. Until that time that the toxins reach a more manageable level, the public should refrain from any and all water contact activities.
Lake Alerts were already issued twice for Lake Rowena in May and January of this year.
