EDIT: The original version of this post stated that the mayor was encouraging people to wear masks in crowded outdoor settings, which is incorrect. This post has been updated to reflect the correct statement.

Just as the Orange County School Board voted to make masks optional for the coming school year, Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings is now encouraging all residents to consider wearing masks in outdoor indoor settings again.

Demings stated that the mask pivot is in response to the rampant spread of the highly contagious Delta variant of COVID-19 among unvaccinated people in recent weeks, reinforcing that Orange County is in the high-risk category for community transmission according to the CDC, due to the recent rise in local cases.

The Delta variant is currently accounting for more than half of all COVID-19 cases.

The American government had set a goal to vaccinate 70 percent of adults by July 4, 2021 but we have currently only reached 59,69 percent.
