Micro-mobility company, Bird (Website), is trying something new to try to get riders to think twice before riding while intoxicated.

The company has launched what it calls a “Safe Start” initiative that will discourage people from riding its scooters while under the influence. App users will be prompted to spell the word “SAFE” on a pop-up screen before being allowed to check out a scooter between the hours of 10 p.m. and 4 a.m.

App users who are unable to correctly enter the code on the app will be encouraged to find an alternative method of transportation like a rideshare company or a taxi.

The Safe Start campaign is being rolled out in America this summer before being deployed around the world.
