URBAN CHICKEN

Orange County government is looking to follow in the little claw prints of Orlando and Winter Park and is considering launching a program that would allow residents outside of those municipalities to keep chickens on their private property.

Maitland and Winter Garden also have Backyard Chicken Programs but the county seems to have been brooding on the issue for a few years. With a focus on enhancing access to fresh food in the unincorporated parts of the county though, one of the easiest ways to meet that mission is to consider allowing people to keep hens at home.

The proposed ordinance would amend “Chapter 38, Zoning,” to allow residents to keep up to four chickens for personal egg consumption in specific owner-occupied, single-family, and mobile home residential zoning districts with certain conditions.
