The Honorable Mable Butler, the first African American woman to serve on Orlando City Council and the first African American member of Orange County’s Board of Commissioners, will be presented with the Historical Society of Central Florida’s prestigious John Young History Maker Award on September 28 for her outstanding contributions to the community.

The award is named in honor of Orlando’s Captain John Young, who was mission commander of Apollo 16 and the ninth person to walk on the moon, and it is given to Central Floridians who make a historic impact on the region.

The John Young History Maker Past Award will be presented posthumously to Joel Strack, who is recognized as a trailblazer in Orlando’s LGBTQ+ community. Strack, who died in 2019, co-founded the Orlando Gay Chorus and helped launch Orlando’s pride parade and Disney’s Gay Days. He also served on the board of directors for the LGBT+ Center of Orlando on Mills Avenue.

The celebration will also feature the presentation of the John Young History Maker Future Scholarship, which will be awarded to Anna Duncan, a senior at Edgewood Junior/Senior High School in Titusville, and a History Center volunteer since 2019.
