Orlando Mayor Dyer announced at a recent event hosted by the Brooking Institution and the United Nations Foundation that the City of Orlando would be releasing its first Voluntary Local Review of its Sustainable Development Goals.

The assessment allows the City to confirm that its goals are aligned with those of the United Nations, which were put into place in 2015 and adopted by all 192 member countries. The goals outline 17 steps to achieve by 2030 to protect the planet, end poverty, and improve the quality of life for future generations.

“In Orlando, sustainability and resiliency are a top priority, but real climate action doesn’t happen with one city working alone. This is why we are excited to share our Voluntary Local Review, and to join cities and countries worldwide to better assess our collective progress toward preserving our planet for generations to come.”

The City of Orlando is the fourth municipality in the country to complete a VLR, alongside Los Angeles, New York, and Pittsburgh. Efforts that are highlighted in the report include:

  • Hiring the city’s first Equity Official, Merchon Green, to ensure equity and inclusion are a part of all public programs and initiatives.
  • The City is meeting 13% of its energy needs through renewable energy sources.
  • Installing 100 new electric vehicle charging stations across the city and converting the LYMMO to zero-emission electric buses.
  • Banning single-use plastics at city facilities and public parks.
