EARLY BUTTERFLY GARDEN RENDERING

The Orlando Land Trust (Website), which recently completed a successful $3.24 million campaign to purchase property adjacent to Lake Eola Park in an effort to add to downtown greenspace, has just announced another project for the downtown park.

The Trust will now be donating a sculpture and butterfly garden in the southwestern quadrant of the park, next to the (not so historic) Sperry Fountain. The project, which is named the Grandmother’s Legacy of Love, in honor of the two founders of the Orlando Land Trust, Lynn Long and Eugenia Sefcik, who have referred to themselves as “two little old ladies” all through the capital campaign to secure the former 7-Eleven property for their park expansion project.

The proposed abstract sculptures, designed by local artist Barbara Sorensen, are modeled after butterflies and made with shaped colored wire and will be mounted into the garden as depicted in the early rendering above.

A Monument and Memorial request has already been approved by the Families, Parks and Recreation Board, but the next step will be to gain approvals from the Municipal Planning Board, the Appearance Review Board, and likely, through Permitting before sending an agreement to City Council for final approval.

SOUTHWESTERN PARK SEGMENT OF DRAFT MASTER PLAN

The City of Orlando is currently carrying out a Master Planning process for Lake Eola Park, which originally didn’t call for a monument or garden in the area, but according to Public Information Officer, Samantha Holsten, the City has “… always intended for something like this to happen in and near that area of the park, to coincide with the ongoing efforts of the Orlando Land Trust to expand the footprint of Lake Eola Park.”

Long told Bungalower that the Trust has been working with the City of Orlando and the Master Plan consultants, GAI – Community Solutions Group, to integrate their proposal into their work.

The Orlando Land Trust is requesting that the City of Orlando take on all maintenance costs of the installation once completed.
