City of Orlando staff held a virtual community meeting this week to share some of their vision to help guide transportation investments and development activities for the Virginia Drive corridor as it continues to develop into the near future.
The City of Orlando has been studying Virginia Drive, from North Orange Avenue to North Mills Avenue, for the past few years, to understand current right-of-way constraints and design a complete, more comprehensive cross-section for the roadway, while implementing the vision of the Virginia Drive Special Plan, based on the Virginia/Lake Highland Transportation and Land Use Study.
Some short-term opportunities that were identified so far during the study include:
- More street trees
- More bike racks
- Additional on-street parking
- Possible cycle track/multi-use pathway
- Wider sidewalks
- Possibly undergrounding utilities
- More mid-block parkings and pedestrian safety improvements.
The next steps include completing a series of cross-section layouts by the end of the year with a finalized list of possible improvements by early 2022.
There is no set timetable for these improvements, like better landscaping and wider sidewalks, are being expedited by developments like The Yard as they build along the corridor.
