According to Orange County Utilities, the Omicron variant of COVID-19 has been detected in local wastewater samples.

The County was quick to state in a prepared statement that the sample was detected in a beta-testing, preliminary level and that they are expecting more definitive results by this Wednesday at which point Orange County Mayor Jerry L. Demings will be holding an official announcement that afternoon.

Orange County Utilities provides wastewater services to approximately 871,000 customers. The two service areas where the Omicron variant was detected, the Northwest Water Reclamation Facility and the South Water Reclamation facility, provide services to some 84,000 customers and 455,000 customers respectively.
