The Florida Department of Health has just issued a Public Health and Safety Alert in regards to an “exponential increase in overdoses” associated with fentanyl.

Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that is up to 100 times more potent than morphine. According to the State of Floria, even a portion as small as two milligrams, the size of five grains of salt, can be fatal.

Florida has seen a number of recent overdoses and deaths from the use of illicit drugs containing fentanyl, including marijuana, cocaine, and counterfeit prescriptions, and in some of the cases, the users weren’t even aware their drugs were laced with it.

In 2020 over 6,100 people died of fentanyl overdoses, and current trends point to an increase in 2021.
