Armored mixed martial artists, the Florida Fire Drakes (Facebook Instagram), have just succeeded in battling their way to being accepted to an international competition in Spain this April, representing the United States.

The Fire Drakes, who you may recall from the street party, is a mixed martial arts team that specializes in the high-impact sport of Armored Combat which is exactly what it sounds like — a full-contact, gladiatorial-like combat sport where people fight each other while wearing roughly 70 lbs of medieval armor with recreational, blunted medieval weapons. These aren’t Ren Faire actors or LARPers, these are trained MMA athletes that compete in points-based matches to be the last one standing.

The team will be heading to the International Medieval Combat Federation’s IMCF World Championship on April 29-May 2 where they will be facing off against 25 other member teams including groups from Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Mexico, New Zealand, Poland, Quebec, Ukraine, and more.

In order to make it there to compete and represent Orlando, they’ve started a GoFundMe to raise a modest goal of $5,000, which you can contribute to HERE. If you want to see them in action first, you can come watch them face off against each other in a series of friendly matches at the Faded Kingdom Beer Festival on January 28 outside the World of Beer – Downtown by Lake Eola. While also drinking beers.
