Former Disney Feature Animation artist, Thomas Thorspecken (Website), will premiere a special four-minute short film at this year’s Orlando Fringe Festival on Friday, May 19, at 6 p.m. in the outdoor Orlando Shakes courtyard.
Thorspecken, who made a name for himself locally with his blog, Analog Artist Digital World, has been creating one watercolor or digital sketch a day since January 2009. Prior to the pandemic, Thorspecken, or Thor to his friends and admirers, could be seen setting up a chair in the back of arts and cultural events, festivals, or performances, documenting the best event happening each day. When the pandemic hit in early 2020, Thor shifted his focus to daily commentaries on COVID and the political landscape around it.
“From the start of the COVID pandemic, minimizers falsely claimed the virus was no worse than the flu. After more than a million COVID deaths in America and mass infection becoming the accepted norm, minimizers persist,” Thorspecken stated in a press release earlier this week.
Thorspecken completed the film on May 11, 2023, when the United States officially lifted the COVID Emergency, using Artificial Intelligence to splice the art together, and set it to music by local musician, Andy Matchett.
The film premiere is part of the festival’s third annual “Film as Visual Art” showcase.
